An Overview of Understanding Learning Disabilities
A learning disability is a difference in how the brain takes in and uses information. It affects comprehension, speech, literacy and numeracy, and it lasts into adulthood. Public Health England reported that in 2018, 67,765 children in England had an Education, Health and Care Plan naming a…

Awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)
A child with developmental language disorder may read fluently and still miss most of what is said in a lesson. DLD affects how language is learned, understood and used, across phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. It affects around seven per cent of children, and it is more…

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
A child who is struggling does not always look like it. One misses milestones quietly. Another is written off as disruptive. Staff who know what typical development looks like are the ones who spot the gap early, and early is when support works best. The course starts with child development and…

Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
Spoken language is how most teaching is delivered and how most learning is demonstrated. A child who cannot follow a multi-step instruction, or find the word they need, or read the social rules of a conversation, is shut out of both. SLCN is the most common childhood disability in the UK. The…

Supporting Children with Hearing Impairment
A child with a hearing impairment can look like a child who is not listening. Mild or fluctuating loss often goes unnoticed, and the effects show up in speech, language, friendships and behaviour rather than in an obvious struggle to hear. The course explains how the ear works, the types, degrees…

Understanding and Supporting Students with Developmental Language Disorders
A child with developmental language disorder understands less of the lesson than anyone realises. DLD affects language, not intelligence, and because it is invisible the child is often read as lazy, rude or disengaged. It affects around 7% of children, so most classes contain one or two. The course…

Understanding Visual Impairment in Children and Young People
Vision impairment is a low-incidence disability in UK schools, affecting around two children in every thousand. Very few of those children are totally blind. Most have some functional vision, and the classroom either makes use of it or wastes it. The course explains what visual impairment is, how…

About the courses
How long does a course take?
Most take between 45 minutes and two hours. The longer safeguarding courses run to three. You can stop and come back where you left off.
Are they accredited?
Our courses are CPD-accredited and carry CPD points, which count towards the record you keep here or send elsewhere.
Are they kept up to date?
Yes. Courses tied to statutory guidance, such as Keeping Children Safe in Education, are reviewed when that guidance changes rather than once a year out of habit.
Can my school assign courses to staff?
Yes. A school or trust can assign the courses each role needs and see who has completed them.
